The Worst Thing to Happen to Gaming Since Jack?

Rapelay, a game by Illusion, is about rape. It centers around a man named Kimura Masaya who stalks and rapes a mother and her two daughters. Oddly enough, this doesn’t leave me with warm, fuzzy feelings about the gaming industry.

Once the pervert player has completed the story mode, free mode is unlocked. You can probably guess what that means and you’d be right. Once free mode is unlocked, the player can rape any woman in the game and convince other males to follow his example. It sounds awesome if you’re a sick, perverted bastard.

Breaking: UGO buys 1up; EGM Magazine Dead

1up
While there may have been rumblings that Ziff Davis was in line to sell 1up.com, and their sister mag EGM, I don’t think I actually expected it to happen in, almost literally, the blink of an eye.

1up.com will continue to function, the magazine EGM was not so lucky, and has been pronounced dead at the scene. The January issue, available in stores now, is the last issue for the long-lasting mag.

There have also been reports via Twitter messages that many of the staff at 1up have been let go. The full list is after the jump, and more info can be found at the link below:

Well, Kotaku has found another crazy story that involves video games. This time some 17 year old kid shot both his parents in the head for not letting him play Halo 3. This goes to show you that Halo 3 is PURE EVIL. The kids mother died instantly, the father (who is a minister) survived…AND FORGAVE HIM!!! Click the link to check out the whole article.

Metal Gear Solid Theme = Plagiarism?

Posted in Game Politics/Law, News, Playstation 3 with tags , , , , on December 13, 2008 by Stefano Terry

Metal Gear Solid 4, from Konami, Playstation 3, 2008

Classical Russian composer Sviridov produced this theme in 1974 for Pushkin’s verse “Metel”. The song bears a few striking resemblances to Metal Gear Solid’s main theme.

Hear it for yourself below:

Personally, I think there are moments of the song that are similar to the Metal Gear Solid theme, but I also detect a bit of “Frog’s Theme” from Chrono Trigger as well. It’s a beautiful song, and I think Sviridov would be amused that another composer (who apparently had never heard of Sviridov), would craft something equally beautiful 24 years later. Especially with that composer having never heard his music before (allegedly; you can never be 100% certain in these matters).

I’m not sure which theme I like more. They are both fantastic pieces of music. So what do you think? Are the Russians onto something? Do you think a lawsuit is valid? Or is it just one big coincedence?

I don’t actually know myself. The majority of both songs are so different from one another that I find it hard to scream “plagiarism” for a few melodies that are simple.
