Liveblogging the Spike VGA Awards

After some extremely obnoxious computer issues, I’m finally up and running here at the VGAs! I have to be honest, outside of some game announcements and reveals, I’m skeptical about this show. Ah well, let’s do it!

7:49: Mega Fox is on to announce the Game of the Year: Nominees: Grand Theft Auto 4, Little Big Planet, Fallout 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, Gears of War 2. Winner: Grand Theft Auto 4. Also won Best Action/Adventure Game. *cough*

And that’s a wrap. Well, that wasn’t too painful. I think I need a drink.

7:43: Jack Black is back to premiere Brutal Legend. Jack Black welding a blowtorch is probably not advisable, but hey, there you go. There was some genuinely amusing Jack Black antics here. Tim Schaefer rocks, and Psychonauts was horribly underrated, so hopefully Brutal Legend lives up to that high standard. It looks pretty decent. There aren’t enough humorous games out there.

Best Driving Game: Burnout Paradise
Best Fighting Game: Soul Calibur 4
Best Game based on a TV Show or Movie: Lego Indiana Jones
Best Male Performance: The Guy who played Niko Belic
Best Female Performance: Debbie Mae West as Meryl in MGS4
Best Graphics: Metal Gear Solid 4
Best Handheld Game: Professor Layton

Jenny McCarthy won something for Red Alert, but they were just flying through the winners, so hell, I don’t know.

7:30: Awkward skateboard competition segues into Studio of Year: Nominees: Media Molecule, Rockstar North, Harmonix, Bethesda. Winner: Media Molecule. Now there’s a genuine surprise. They also won “Best PS3 game.”

7:27: Best Music Game: Nominees: Guitar Hero: World Tour, Wii Music, Rock Band 2, Singstar. Winner: Rock Band 2. Wii Music was robbed I tell you, fricking robbed!

7:26: Watchmen: The End is Nigh trailer. Looks ok. Standard beat em up fare. The comic is brilliant, so my expectations of the game are low.

7:20: Tony Hawk is back up on stage to introduce your friend and ours, 50 Cent. I’m serious, at the start of his performance, I felt a little wetness in my ears. I reached up to touch it, and it was blood. My blood. My ears are bleeding. True story.

7:17: Mafia 2 trailer up next. If it’s real time, the visuals look nice. I love mafia themed games, and this one most certainly looks promising.

7:15: Stacy Kiebler and Odette Yusten are onstage to introduce the world premiere of Terminator: Salvation. The game looks ok. Another third person title that follows the stop and pop gameplay made popular by Gears of War.

7:07: Busta Rhymes is up on stage to introduce the world premiere of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. The entire trailer is composed in real time, and it looks fantastic.

7:00: Jack Black is back with an awkward vaudeville style act that’s flat, until Jerry Stiller gets up on stage and give him some pointers. They introduce Chris Klein and Kristen Kruek, from the Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li travesty, I mean film.

Best RPG: Nominees: Fable 2, Fallout 3, World of Warcraft, Wrath of the Lich King, and The World Ends with You. Winner: Fallout 3. Take that Adam Sessler!

6:56: Will finishes his rambling, and Geoff Keighly is up introducing the world premiere of the Lost and The Damned downloadable content for the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV. It looks like typical GTA, and that’s not a bad thing, mind you.

6:52: Tony Hawk is up, introducing our “Gamer God,” Will Wright. They show a video then plays of Will’s various creations from Spore and The Sims talking about how much they love Will Wright. *Cough* I love Will Wright, and I was able to talk with him briefly earlier tonight, but he deserves better than that. He then proceeds to ramble about his past influences in gaming. It’s clear that the celebs in the crowd have no fricking idea what he’s talking about, but hey, it’s Will Wright. I understand, Will. I do.

6:50: Kim Kardashian fumbles through the introduction to the world premiere of Dante’s Inferno, from EA Games. The game flashes through the seven deadly sins, and then segues into a little gameplay. It looks alright. More will have to be shown before I get officially intrigued.

6:41: Chris Evans introduces the American Rejects, who managed to cock-block my photo op with Hideo Kojima earlier today.

6:40: The delicious Elisha Dusku is up on stage to present the Big Name in the Game, Keifer Sutherland, of Call of Duty: World at War.

6:30: Neil Patrick Harris is next up to announce the winners of the best independent game fueled by DEW! Nominees: Audio Surf, Braid, Pixel Junk Eden, World of Goo. NPH doesn’t have the winner card. World of Goo wins. I haven’t played it, but if it beat out Braid and Pixel Junk Eden, it better be damn good!

6:28: Peter Moore, from EA Games, is up on stage preparing to reveal Fight Night Round 4. He introduces Mike Tyson, who actually reveals the footage. If it’s actually real time footage being shown, it’s quite the graphical ugrade from Round 3. Looks really good.

6:21: God of War 3 trailer shown. Kratos looks badass. Enough said. No  release date given. Here’s hoping for a 2009 release.

6:20: Best Shooter: Nominees: Far Cry 2, Resistance 2, Left4Dead, Gears of War The Winner is: Gears of War 2. Gears also wins best Xbox 360 game. Is anyone surprised? Congrats Epic Games!

6:16: LL Cool J comes up onstage with a brief song that segues into the first exclusive footage of the new UFC title. LL breaks into “Mama said knock you out,” to the footage.

6:00: Jack Black opens the show in typical Jack Black fashion; a rude and crude video opening with him and his gaming consoles, the Xbox 360, and Playstation 3 preparing for a night of debauchery. Things are getting real hot and heavy when the Nintendo Wii gets home early from church, and reeks some rightoeus vengeance again old Jack. Vengeance…with a revolver. Our host then appears on stage, finishing his opening act with a song (of course), and bringing his sexy co-host, Marisa Miller on stage, who announces that the new Gears of War 2 map pack, Combustible, goes Live tonight.
