This week’s addition of Faceoff is taking a turn for the horrific, pairing Capcom’s Resident Evil 5 against EA’s newcomer franchise, Dead Space. We’re going to compare everything from visuals, to story, to controls, gameplay and scare factor, to bring you the lowdown on which title will bring you more scares for your buck. The Resident Evil series was my first taste of the Survival Horror genre many moons ago, and it’s hard to believe that the franchise has been around for nearly 13 years.
After 4 entries into the series proper, and more than as many spin offs, it’s not unreasonable to assume that the franchise may have lost it’s sheen over the years. After Resident Evil 4 breathed fresh life into the series, RE5 was going to have to step it’s game up if they wanted to be relevant when there are a number of other Survival Horror titles out there on the market challenging it’s status.
Last night I got the chance to sit down and spend a good hour or so with the Resident Evil 5 demo on the Playstation 3, so I thought I’d put down my thoughts.
After booting up the demo, the first thing you notice is the swanky looking interface, which feature what appear to be cells in the blood stream wriggling about and connected to the game options (ie, Start Game, Options, etc).
After beginning a new game, you have the choice to try out two different sections of the game to play through, the first a tense affair where you must outlast a continuous wave of the infected while waiting for your pilot to arrive, and the second a creepy walk through a seemingly desolate and empty town, culminating in a battle with a scarred, chainsaw wearing baddie.

Not to be outdone by Microsoft’s Japanese Xbox 360 Resident Evil 5 Bundle, Siliconera reports that Sony has also struck a deal with Capcom to bring Japanese gamers a similar zombified PS3 treat.
The Playstation 3 Resident Evil 5 bundle will include an 80gig PS3, two Dual Shock 3 controllers (it is a co-op game, afterall), and of course, Resident Evil 5 (Biohazard 5 in Japan). There are no extra goodies like the soundtrack in the 360 bundle, but the PS3 itself is a limited edition unit, with the Biohazard logo emblazoned across the body. The bundle will retail for JYP 48,980 (GBP 525).
Game Industry reports that the Japanese can expect to get some bundle love for the Xbox 360 in the form of a Resident Evil 5 and a Star Ocean 4 bundle which will release early this year.

Some folks love their Trophies, so here’s a nice little Trophy list for Capcom’s upcoming Survival Horror title, Resident Evil 5 (maybe you’ve heard of it?).
RE4 scared the bejeebus outta me, and was a great breath of fresh air for the aging franchise, so I can’t wait to get my hands on part 5. Even if it’s just “RE4 in HD,” I will be content.
